Do dentists in Australia bulk bill?
Most dental care is not covered by Medicare. Bulk billing can be available for children needing to access dentistry services under the Commonwealth’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is an Australian Government program that provides $1,095 over 2 calendar years for children aged 2 to 17 for basic dental services.
The eligibility criteria for Medicare Bulk Billing includes:
- The child is under the age of 18.
- The child is eligible for Medicare.
- The child or family receives one of the following Australian Government at least once in the year payments:
- Youth Allowance
- Family Tax Benefit Part A
- Disability Support Pension
- Parenting Payments
- Special Benefit
- Carer Payments
- Double Orphan Pension
- If the child is over 16 years of age, the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme or the Veteran’s Children Education Scheme.
Dental Services Provided
If the above criteria apply, Gentle Dental Centre bulk bill the following services to Medicare utilising the CDBS:

Dental Services Not Provided
The following services cannot be bulk billed to Medicare utilising the CDBS:
- Children’s orthodontic dental treatment
- Cosmetic dental work
- Dental services requiring a hospital visit
If your child requires these dental services, we will do our best to support you and accommodate your lifestyle and budget.
How often should you see the dentist
We recommend regular check-ups, as they are crucial for the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth overall. Routine visits also allow us to identify potential risks, enabling us to implement preventive strategies.
While we generally suggest a dental check-up every 6 to 12 months, we understand that this may not be the best fit for everyone. Some patients may require more or less frequent visits, and we will advise you on the ideal schedule for your check-ups.

How do I know what my health insurance will cover?
Upon request, we can supply you with item numbers for our procedures along with our fees before your treatment. We can either swipe your insurance card with our HICAPS machine to provide a quote on the spot, using the treatment plan provided after a consult/exam, or you can then contact your insurance provider with these numbers to request a quote, allowing them to inform you about your policy coverage.
